How to get to Chachapoyas

By plane
In March 2008, Aerodiana began scheduled flights to Chachapoyas from Cajamarca and Chiclayo in a 12-passenger Cessna 208. For reservations and further information contact the airline through their website or call (01) 344-0699 in Lima or (074) 60-8092 in Chiclayo. Because bad weather often shuts down the Chachapoyas airport we strongly recommend that you make contingency plans.

By bus
Chiclayo-Chachapoyas
Movil Tours
Leaves Chiclayo at 2000, arrives Chachapoyas at 0500, approximately. Phone: Chiclayo (074) 27-1940; Chachapoyas (041) 77-8545. Movil Tours also has daily departures to Chachapoyas from Lima.

Please note that due to road works the road between Pedro Ruiz and Chachapoyas is only open from 7 pm to 6 am Monday-Saturday and as of 1pm on Sundays until 6 am the following morning.

Cajamarca-Chachapoyas (via Celendín)
Several bus and colectivo services run between Cajamarca and Celendín.
From Celendín, mini-buses go to Leymebamba twice a week, leaving on Thursdays and Sundays from Celendín’s Ovalo El Monumento at approximately 0930; and returning to Celendín on Fridays and Tuesdays. Phone (076) 85-5078. Several bus lines also run between Celendin and Leymebamba and on to Chachapoyas and the department of San Martín.

Tarapoto-Chachapoyas
There are daily flights from Lima to Tarapoto and scheduled daily bus service from Tarapoto to Lima, stopping in Pedro Ruíz, where you can take a colectivo or a taxi to Chachapoyas.

Chachapoyas-Leymebamba
Bus and colectivo services leave Chachapoyas daily (except Sundays) at noon and at 1600 from the fourth block of Jr. 2 de mayo and at 1600 from the eighth block of Jr. Libertad.

By taxi
Chiclayo-Chachapoyas. Cost: approximately S/. 650
Chachapoyas-Leymebamba. Cost: approximately S/. 150

By rental car
from Cajamarca: Grifo El Amigo, phone (076) 34-1579, rents four-wheel drive, four- door pickup trucks, with and without chauffeur. Be forewarned, however, that the road to Leymebamba via Celendín-Balsas is in terrible shape and the drive can take up to 10 hours, especially during the rainy season when there are frequent landslides. There are no gas stations between Celendín and Leymebamba.
